Maths

At Hawthorn Community Primary School, we believe that all children have the potential to become competent mathematicians. We teach through a mastery approach using the Effective Maths programme to teach mathematics from EYFS to Year 6, giving all learners a coherent and progressive curriculum.

In addition to daily maths lessons, we practice of a number of key aspects, namely calculation methods and the recall of key number facts (number bonds and times tables). We use the Securing Fluency Programme to achieve this alongside a number of additional regular activities, such as ‘3 in 3’.

We recognise the spiralling, cumulative nature of understanding mathematics and so teach it in single-age year groups.

We aim for our children to be able to:

  • Build a sense of enjoyment and curiosity towards Mathematics.

  • Recognise the importance of Maths in the wider world.

  • Be fluent in the fundamental key skills of Maths such as recall of number facts and use of the number system.

  • Develop the ability to reason mathematically, make generalisations and make sense of solutions.

  • Solve problems by applying their mathematical knowledge.

  • Believe that they can learn and succeed mathematically to a high level.

  • Develop independence when working mathematically.

  • Persevere when doing Maths and see struggle and being stuck as positive and important experiences.

  • Build their mathematical skills, knowledge and understanding consistently over time.

The document below details the units for each year group and their content. In addition, you will find calculation policies which show the steps taken from year to year to support children’s competence.
