Maths
At Hawthorn Community Primary School, we believe that all children have the potential to become competent mathematicians. We teach through a mastery approach using the Effective Maths programme to teach mathematics from EYFS to Year 6, giving all learners a coherent and progressive curriculum.
In addition to daily maths lessons, we practice of a number of key aspects, namely calculation methods and the recall of key number facts (number bonds and times tables). We use the Securing Fluency Programme to achieve this alongside a number of additional regular activities, such as ‘3 in 3’.
We recognise the spiralling, cumulative nature of understanding mathematics and so teach it in single-age year groups.
We aim for our children to be able to:
-
Build a sense of enjoyment and curiosity towards Mathematics.
-
Recognise the importance of Maths in the wider world.
-
Be fluent in the fundamental key skills of Maths such as recall of number facts and use of the number system.
-
Develop the ability to reason mathematically, make generalisations and make sense of solutions.
-
Solve problems by applying their mathematical knowledge.
-
Believe that they can learn and succeed mathematically to a high level.
-
Develop independence when working mathematically.
-
Persevere when doing Maths and see struggle and being stuck as positive and important experiences.
-
Build their mathematical skills, knowledge and understanding consistently over time.
